How important are samples before placing a bulk apparel order?

I’m getting ready to place my first larger clothing order, but I’m unsure how much attention I should give the sample stage. I want the finished pieces to match my expectations. The apparel partner came up during my recent research into custom manufacturing. How important is it to order and inspect samples before committing to bulk production? What details should I check, such as stitching, sizing, fabric weight, printing, and overall fit? I’d love to hear what experienced brand owners usually look for.
